THE RUN-AND-SHOOT

* * *

The concept was borrowed by Mouse Davis from Tiger Ellison: Spread the field with your offensive formation (thus stretching the defense) and rely on the quarterback and his receivers to be in perfect sync. Mouse unleashed his version in the late ’60s. In this play, the three receivers to the right side run assigned routes: a deep “go” on the outside (if he can’t beat the defender, he breaks it off with a 15- to 18-yard curl to the sideline), a seam route in the middle and a shallow cross on the inside. The lone receiver on the left side simply reads the defense and runs away from the coverage. The quarterback makes the same read; it is up to him to decide which of the three receivers presents the best target. Three-step drop, quick decision, delivery.
